Creative Grief

b0004745-cropHello! My name is Carla Harvey. You may recognize me as the singer of a certain metal band, but I am also a licensed mortician and creative grief practioner based out of Los Angeles county. Grief and loss are such daunting words! As human beings we try to avoid them at all costs, but eventually they seep in to our lives. When they do, some of us need an extra hand to help us get through it.

It’s not always easy to speak about loss. Society has us hung up on our own mortality, making most people a bit uneasy when dealing with someone who has recently gone through a traumatic event. One of the most important things you can do for a person that has experienced a loss is to allow them to speak about it. With my creative grief procedures, I hope to offer up a transformational space for hurting hearts to not necessarily find closure after a death, but understand the changed relationship between yourself and your loved one, and how you can carry them with you on your return to wholehearted living.

Why creative grief therapy? Why apply the arts to healing? As an artist and musician I have applied this technique in my own life several times. I truly believe that creativity can bring about incredible catharsis and enrich your life. Do not be intimidated by the word “creative.” Art comes in many forms. There is no skill level needed, no judgment. It is the process and exploration of self that is key.

Perhaps you haven’t experienced a death, but you are going through another type of loss. One thing to hold dear is that everyone’s grief experience is different. There is no hierarchy in loss. Perhaps you are the caretaker of someone with terminal illness, have recently gone through a divorce or loss of a relationship, loss of a job, or loss of a pet. At Good Grief, I’m here to listen and help. On a personal level, I have dealt with much loss in my own life, and have always said that I’ve gotten more from those things then the things I’ve gained. My moments of loss have provided me with an incredible amount of strength and tenacity, and id like to help you find your strength as well
